Haiti - Politic : Remarks of Michaelle Jean at the inauguration of Michel Martelly

Invited, Saturday to the inauguration ceremonies of President-elect Michel Martelly, Michaelle Jean, UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti, has shared many of her thoughts :

"...I see that all international delegations that are present today, are determined [...] it is sure that the electoral process has slowed down all the efforts, now, I think we're in the battle [...] there are many challenges, but we can overcome them. I have confidence, the logic of assistantship must stop, the only thing that this logic can produce, is the dependence and we have finally internalize this dependence.

I now believe, that the logic that we must take, is a logic of investment, of investment in the capacity of individuals, in the institutions, in the economy and I agree to say that Haiti is not only a lot of misery, it is also a lot of potential, a country full of potential. [...]

He [the President Martelly] has already said that the education is a paramount thing, it sure that the challenge is enormous, because sending all children to school free and fast, it will take much effort. This is not just a question of building schools, it is also a question of programs to ensure that all children in the country of Haiti receive a quality education and accessible, it is important.

I do not believe that Haiti will be able to do it all alone, normally there are institutions such as UNESCO which are there to give this type of response [...] For two months I'm on a crusade for Haiti, I went around to remind to the international community to fulfill their commitments."
