Haiti - Politic : The Parliamentary Commission on the electoral fraud began its work

The Parliamentary Commission of Investigation on the electoral fraud began its sessions hearings Tuesday, May 17, 2011. One of the priorities of this commission is to shed light on the corruption accusations against some electoral advisers. Several personalities had been accused among others: the Chairperson of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), to have received bribes in order to ensure a favorable decision by the National Electoral Complaints and Challenges Bureau (BCEN). On the other hand, some final results corrected in the decisions of BCEN Special, have also been challenged.

In an interview, Sen. Youri Latortue, who chairs the Commission , explained:

"There are Deputies, senators who are in office, candidates who participated in the elections we thought that it was important to hear them, to gather information [...]

The objective of the commission is to arrive to see:

Firstly, compared to everything that's happened during the elections, all the disorder, the who were given, the OAS which has intervened, how we can make recommendations for the organization of better elections in this country.

Second, the system that we have now, the system that organizes the elections is reliable or it deserves to be changed ? The current system has led to many disputes at the Departmental Electoral Complaints and Challenges Bureau (BCED) and BCEN, [...] there not a system that can avoid these challenges ?

So we collect data, we have to meet personalities and then we'll meet all members of the Electoral Council, to hear their version. [...] then, in the Commission chamber we will finalize a report that we will submit to the Assembly. All this will take time because there are people who will come and others who do not want to come here [...] work began today and will continue for two to three weeks, the time to receive all information and make recommendations..."

The report of the commission should be submitted to the Assembly before the end of this month, said Senator Latortue.
