Haiti - Health : Remarkable 2019 results of the Cuban medical brigade in Haiti

As part of Cuba-Haiti bilateral cooperation, nearly 2,700,000 consultations were carried out in 2019 by Cuban health professionals, despite the tense socio-political situation the country has experienced, confirmed Luis Orlando Oliveros, Head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti, during the annual review.

This figure represents an increase of more than 339,000 consultations compared to 2018, mainly thanks to field visits explained Oliveros, stressing that 2019 had been a tense year in the midst of a complex crisis which required an additional effort to reach all the objectives, taking into account the deadlock periods in the regions.

In 2019 more than 30,000 surgeries were performed, approximately 5,500 deliveries, nearly 6,000 patients were rehabilitated and 710 people regained their vision thanks to the "Operación Milagros" (Operation Miracles).

Oliveros said that targets for 2020 focus on increasing service delivery, improving the hygieno-epidemiological situation, training Haitian doctors and the efficient use of resources.

He said that in the areas served by the Cuban Brigade, there had been no non-infant maternal deaths, despite the widespread use of ambulatory deliveries and had not diagnosed any case of cholera.

Recall that since 1998, nearly 8,000 Cuban health workers (in rotation) have served in the 10 departments of Haiti, performing nearly 30 million consultations, 578,000 surgeries, 178,104 births, rehabilitating 185,828 patients and saving more than 300,000 lives.

Currently, more than 700 Cuban specialists work in around 40 medical posts, community hospitals, health centers, prosthetics workshops and other institutions.
