Haiti - DR : 600 soldiers of the special forces of commando battalions in reinforcement at the border

Following the announcement of 2 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-30310-haiti-flash-2-cases-of-covid-19-confirmed-in-the-country.html , the Minister of Defense, General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, within the framework of the actions of the High Level Commission for the prevention and control of the coronavirus Covid-19, instructed Major General Estanislao Gonell Regalado, to carry out strengthening the border.

Reinforcements which include the dispatch of 600 soldiers from the special forces of commando and fighter battalions, in order to increase the operational capacity of infantry brigades in the border area and to prevent illegal entry into Dominican territory and to prevent the risk of spread of Covid-19 on Dominican territory. Additional helicopters and more all-terrain vehicles (buggies) of motorcycles and drones will also be deployed. Coastal border areas have also been reinforced by Dominican Navy units.

Special forces will monitor in particular all the vulnerable points of the border that is difficult to access, in particular the clandestine passages used by Haitians and smugglers to enter Dominican territory illegally. Since the borders were closed, many Haitians have been trying to cross the Dominican border by all means. Several tried to enter Dominican territory at night, in small boats passing through Lake Azuei. Attempts thwarted by the special forces and doomed to failure with the night surveillance technologies used.
