Haiti - Religion : Pope Francis names a new Bishop in Haiti

The Apostolic Nunciature is pleased to inform the Catholic faithful and all the Haitian people that, wishing to provide for the pastoral good of the diocese of Port-de-Paix, Pope Francis appointed the Reverend Father Charles Peters Barthélus as Bishop.

"The Nunciature exhorts all priests, men and women religious as well as lay faithful to welcome with faith and hope this decision of the Holy Father, which is the expression of his fatherly attention and his pastoral care for the the Church that is in Haiti and all the Haitian people."

For the Interim Government of the Diocese, the Holy Father appointed Apostolic Administrator "vacant sede", His Excellency Monseigneur Pierre-Antoine Paulo (Oblates of Marie-Immaculate) who will assume this office from April 14, until the canonical possession of the diocese by the new Bishop.

Reverend Father Charles Peters Barthélus will replace Archbishop Pierre-Antoine Paulo who, after more than 12 years of service, has retired due to age.

Born in Marchand-Dessalines on November 14, 1970, Father Barthélus was ordained as priest in June 1998. From 1998 to 2001, he served the parish of Sainte-Anne of Port-au-Prince as vicar before occupying the position of administrator at the Sainte-Thérèse parish of Pétion-Ville (2001-2011). Subsequently, he continued his studies at the Catholic Institute of Paris and obtained a license in liturgy (2011-2014). Back to the country in 2014, he occupied the seat of the vice-rector of the Grand Séminaire Notre-Dame d'Haïti.
