Haiti - Agriculture : Signing of 3 agreements with FAO relating to rural populations

Wednesday, José Luis Fernández, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Haiti and Patrix Sévère, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development initialed three relative agreements to the rural populations of Haiti.

Two of these agreements complete the Ministry's response plan to guarantee the availability of agricultural products on the local market in the next two months for all sections of the population in order to avoid the announced food crisis worsened by the coronavirus pandemic.

The third agreement is part of the Government's fight to prevent a possible return of African swine fever to the country. As this is a regional project, the Ministry in doing so intends to catch up with the other countries in the area in their efforts to block the road to this viral disease.

Food security projects will be implemented in the commune of Belle-Anse and in the department of Nippes. The first project concerns the promotion of practices resilient to climate change and the second takes into account emergency assistance for the rehabilitation of the livelihoods of rural populations affected by drought and the socio-economic crisis in the department of Nippes.

To finance the resilience project for the population of Belle-Anse, an envelope of 400,000 Euros has been made available to FAO by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The other two projects are funded by FAO's own funds of US $500,000 each.
