Haiti - Agriculture : FAO strengthens its Emergency Response Program for rural communities

Throughout the month of May 2020, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supported the Ministry of Agriculture to support rural communities in the preparation of the spring agricultural campaign through the supply of seeds and planting material to family farmers in the departments of North-West, North-East, Nippes and Grand'Anse https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-30780-icihaiti-agriculture-fao-support-for-the-spring-agricultural-campaign.html

Given the new challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the food security of vulnerable rural communities, FAO has revised its Emergency Response Program as part of Humanitarian Response Interagency Plan (HRP 2019/2020) in order to respond to the humanitarian crisis and limit its impact on the livelihoods of agricultural households.

The budget of the said program has been revised upwards in order to strengthen the technical support of the Organization to the Ministry of Agriculture and help 240,000 households (± 1.2 million people) in situation of food crisis (IPC, Phases 3 and 4) to protect and restore their livelihoods while respecting preventive measures against the spread of Covid-19.

José Luis Fernández the FAO Representative in Haiti stressed the need to mobilize more resources to simultaneously tackle the challenges linked to food security and those created by the Covid-19 health crisis "Faced with the magnitude of the challenges linked to the humanitarian and health crisis, it is necessary to have at our disposal more substantial means to protect the livelihoods of rural communities which are the most exposed to food crises and natural disasters, and limit the spread of the pandemic and its consequences in rural areas."
