Haiti - FLASH : The Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine partially destroyed by fire

The Dean's Office of the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (FAMV) of the State University of Haiti (UEH) informs that on the night from June 20 to 21, 2020 at around 1:00 am a fire of unknown origin ravaged part of the Faculty's premises.

According to Jocelyn Louissaint, Dean of the FAMV, the part ravaged by flames housed the offices of professors and department directors, the photocopy service, the IT unit, the transport service, the Frantz Pierre-Louis auditorium and the Erick National Herbarium Léonard Ekmann.

The firefighters of Tabarre fought the flames until 9:00 am to limit the spread and control the incident.

The Dean's Office emphasizes that the damage are very significant and, for the moment, it is impossible to provide an exact assessment of the losses. More than thirty offices of professors and department heads, computers and other equipment, filing cabinets containing administrative files and others were totally destroyed

The firefighters of Tabarre were on the site until 9 am to limit the damage which are still enormous. One are not yet able to provide an accurate estimate of the losses.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at the moment, the Dean rules out the cause of a short circuit. The Faculty was without electricity before the incident.
