Haiti - Justice : Securing evidences

As part of the official launch of the national project of securing evidence, supported by UNDP, the Court of First Instance (TPI) of Port-au-Prince just received a safe-resistant to fire, flooding and theft. The many burglaries of the registries (greffes) of the courts of First Instance, demonstrates the necessity to securing the evidences.

This project aims to equip the jurisdictions of the country, of reliable working tools that will enable a better conservation and securing of the evidences. These tools include a safe and registers and monitoring sheets to ensure a better traceability of evidences.

"The conservation and securing of evidences remains one of the recurring problems of the criminal justice in Haiti, It is necessary to note, that previously, many weapons, money, drugs and sensitive evidence have been regularly lost... Which, among other things, explains the need to implement effective control mechanisms for the management of evidence, essential in the treatment of any criminal case", explains Paolo Del Mistro, Manager of Project Rule of Law/Justice.

Under this program, 19 others TPI and Prosecutors office will receive the same tools by the end of the year. Alongside this activity, a guide of registry will be developed and distributed. This practical guide, which explains the use of safes and records will describe the different steps to follow in the framework of the traceability of evidences, for a more transparent management of the latter.

All these initiatives are part of a framework of global Intervention of project Rule of Law of UNPD on the registries whose objective is to improve public services of the criminal justice system.
