Haiti - UN : The PM discusses the renewal of the mandate of BINUH

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe participated in an important meeting with representatives of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), whose mandate will expire on October 16, 2020.

This meeting was structured around the continuity of this UN mission to give its expertise to the Haitian Government in terms of good governance, organization of elections, human rights, justice, the fight against corruption, and professionalization of work of the Haitian National Police. The increase in the percentage allocated to the police institution in the national budget was also discussed.

The representatives of BINUH plan to submit in the coming days a report-assessment of the actions already taken in Haiti, taking into account the work that remains to be carried out, as part of the technical support necessary to support the Government and the Haitian people in general.

The Head of Government demanded clear terms of reference for the renewal of the BINUH Mission as well as for the office that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights intends to install in Haiti. Jouthe also hoped that the PNH audit and verification process, already requested by the Government, could move forward.

The site of the constitutional reform which will take into account the social, political and economic realities of the country was also addressed by Mrs. Hélène la Lime, Representative of BINUH. Jouthe would have preferred that it be the organized civil society which steers this work of reflections around the Constitution, in order to get the country out of this difficult impasse...
