Haiti - Politic : The OAS wants legislative elections in Haiti no later than the end of January 2021

Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) in a recent correspondence to President Jovenel Moïse, shows firmety on the holding of legislative elections, which he would like no later than the end of the month of January 2021 writing "[...] It is imperative to organize the legislative elections at the latest, at the end of January of the next year, to restore, in all serenity, a functional Parliament. Then, when the time comes, to respect the electoral deadlines in order to proceed with the democratic transfer of executive power [...]"

Continuing further "[...] It is with this in mind that I appeal to you, in your capacity as democratically elected Head of State, to lay the first stones essential to the establishment of a technically viable electoral process in accordance with the worrying realities of the hour. This process should allow inclusive participation of all sectors of society and restore, as soon as possible, the proper functioning of the institutions fundamental to the democratic life of the country, including Parliament."

Let us recall that last May Chancellor Claude Joseph requested the technical support of the OAS and the participation of the main partners in the region for the holding of legislative elections (Parliament) and of local authorities (municipal) in Haiti. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-30861-haiti-politic-chancellor-joseph-requests-the-support-of-the-oas-for-the-elections.html

Following this correspondence, the radical opposition of the so-called "Democratic and Popular" movement rejected the OAS call for the organization of elections in January 2021, reaffirming its position "[...] No elections with Jovenel Moïse. No cohabitation with PHTK and allies. The solution lies in mobilizing and setting up a disruptive transition."
