Haiti - FLASH : Voluntary returns of nearly 200,000 Haitians in 9 months

The state of health emergency, the curfew and the measures taken by the Dominican authorities to limit the spread of Covid-19, have made life very difficult for the Haitian community, which operates mainly in the informal sector. These conditions are at the origin of the significant flow of returns recorded at the border (still increasing), Haitians who, unemployed and deprived of economic resources, prefer to return to Haiti to find their families while waiting for better days...

According to the Support Group for Repatriates and Refugees (GARR) for the month of September 2020, at the Haitian-Dominican border 69,290 voluntary returns (49,927 men, 22,942 women, 2,399 girls and 3,022 boys) or 45% more than in August when the GAAR had recorded 47,565 returns

By adding voluntary returns from January to June 78,195 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-31312-haiti-dr-almost-100-000-haitians-return-to-the-country-in-6-months.html 195,050 Haitians returned to Haiti.

To this number must be added the repatriation of Haitians in an irregular migratory situation estimated at 30,000, including 20,629 in the first 6 months of the year and the Haitians who returned to the country through unofficial border crossing points...

The returning Haitians came mostly from San Juan, Azua, Elias Piña, Santiago, Barbalo, Romana, Las Matas, Neiba, Hondovalle, Barorico, Samana and Santo-Domingo.

Enrique García the new Director of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) announced the resumption of control operations in all provinces and the repatriation of all foreigners, whatever their nationality, living in Dominican territory in an irregular migratory situation.
