Haiti - Agriculture : 3 plant pathology laboratories at the service of farmers

As part of the Support Project for Agricultural Research and Development (AREA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID-Haiti) and the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida worked in collaboration with Haitian government and research centers and universities to equip three plant pathology laboratories with microscopes and other improvements to provide plant pathology diagnostics to farmers.

USAID's AREA Project aims to build Haiti's plant pathology capacity to detect, respond to threats and protect crops from disease losses.

Now, trained staff from the Ministry of Agriculture and research and educational institutes can identify new and emerging diseases that threaten key crops and formulate disease control recommendations.

In addition, the USAID project tested 588 new technologies, practices and approaches to identify those with the greatest potential to improve agricultural productivity and food security in Haiti.
