Haiti - FLASH : A madman destroys a statue of J-J Dessalines, under the applause

Thursday, November 5, on the Place d'Armes of Cap-Haitien, an individual identified as Calixte Lucien (40), with mental problem, climbed on the plinth of the statue of the founding father of the Nation, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and attacked to the effigy of the Emperor in front of dozens of residents and curious people who immortalized the scene on their mobile phones.

After many efforts Calixte Lucien managed to bring down the statue which shattered on the ground in several pieces under the ovations of the citizens and this, without any intervention of the police...

After his crime and having come down from the base of the statue, Calixte Lucien very calm, was arrested without opposing resistance by the security agents of the town hall, then handed over to the police authorities.

Yvrose Pierre, interim executive agent of Cap-Haitien deplored the behavior of the population which, according to her, proves that society has hit rock bottom and denotes its disengagement from the symbolism of history by showing disrespect for the prowess of our ancestors. Recalling that this monument is part of the national heritage, she called for justice to be done against the author of this outrage.

After the legal report, the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) recovered all the fragments of the statue.
