Haiti - Politic : Signature of a commitment pact on the political participation of young people

As part of the Project to Strengthen Youth Political Leadership, a signing ceremony of a commitment pact on youth political participation was organized by the Haitian Youth Observatory in the presence of representatives of the United Nations Fund for the population (UNFPA), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Embassy of Canada and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) which support this Project.

It should be noted that this project essentially aims at the recognition and development of youth as a sector in its own right, which must be involved in all societal debates.

This event follows a series of consultations carried out with several important civil society youth organizations working on issues relating to youth political participation, for about 3 months.

This commitment pact, comprising 10 points, was signed by the Observatory of Haitian Youth (OJH), the Association of Volunteers for Democracy (AVD), the Women's Consultation Center (CCOFE), the Action Diplomatic and Social (ADIS-Haiti), Jeunesse Montante, Mouvman Ayiti Kanpe (MAK), Demain en Commun and "Zantray".

The 10 points of the Pact :

1) Facilitate the recognition and development of youth as a sector in its own right. By Youth, one mean young Haitians from 18 to 35 years old, Associations, Organizations, Groups, Institutions and Movements, working for the fulfillment and development of the capacities of young people;

2) Encourage, through an inclusive and open approach, the involvement of young people in all societal debates;

3) Guarantee the representation of young people in political consultations and in the composition of any institution resulting from any political agreement between the different sectors of society;

4) Develop civic education programs that can help build a generation of young men / women capable of actively defending their rights and respecting their duties;

5) Encourage young people of both sexes to take part in political activities;

6) Support the advent of competent and responsible young people in decision-making spaces;

7) Advocate for the adoption of public policies that can facilitate cultural emancipation, social integration and economic empowerment of young men / women;

8) Propose programs, projects, draft laws and any other document that can promote the emancipation of young Haitians;

9) Promote and advocate for the respect of commitments, agreements, conventions among others signed by Haiti in the field of youth;

10) On the one hand, lead the fight against corruption and impunity and on the other hand fight for the respect of human rights, the achievement of equality between men and women, good governance and respect for democratic principles.
