Haiti - Social : Kyung-wha Kang will visit Haiti from July 2 to 6

Kyung-wha Kang, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, will visit Haiti from July 2 to 6, 2011. During her stay, she will travel to areas affected by the earthquake of January 2010. In Port-au-Prince, she will visit several IDP camps and detention facilities. She will inaugurate, Tuesday, July 5, the renovated library of the School of Magistrates.

During the mission, Ms. Kang will meet with the new Haitian authorities, the Parliament, judicial power and the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC) She will also meet the diplomatic corps, representatives of the United Nations Mission in Haiti (Minustah), UN agencies, defenders of the Human Rights and organizations of civil society.

Ms. Kang will have the opportunity to express her concerns about the need to focus on human rights in the reconstruction process, to tackle impunity, to make progress with the reform of the institutions of the rule of law, including : the judiciary, police and prisons, as well as talk about the access of the population to its fundamental rights. Finally, she will discuss with the authorities and other stakeholders concerned of the Universal Periodic Review of Haiti, to the Council of the Human Rights in October 2011.
