Haiti - Insecurity : 1,200 kinappings, 480 gunshot dead in 2020 !

Friday in its annual report the Organization International Action for Human Rights (AIDH), takes stock of the generalized insecurity in Haiti and respect for human rights, describing the situation as chaotic and alarming. This report was submitted to President Moïse, Prime Minister Jouthe and human rights advocates in Haiti.

Reginald Atus, Coordinator of AIDH precised that armed violence in Haiti had claimed the lives of 570 people in 2020, including 480 by bullets and nearly 1,200 men. Women and children had been kidnapped, qualifying these figures as worrying, stressing that "The kidnapping has serious repercussions on all sectors of national life, it is time for drastic measures to be taken to eradicate this phenomenon in the country", deploring government laxity "[...] many voices are raised to denounce this scourge and demand that the competent authorities assume their responsibilities. It seems that nothing has been done [...]"

In its recommendations, the organization proposes, among other things, to restore the authority of the State over the entire territory, to assess PNH agents and to prosecute those guilty of human rights violations, to fight against arbitrary and prolonged preventive detentions.
