Haiti - Politic : The Core Group deeply concerned

Yesterday Monday in a press release, the Core Group (made up of Ambassadors from Germany, Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States of America, France, the European Union, the Special Representative of Organization of American States and the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations) said it was "deeply concerned about the security and political situation, expresses its deep concern at the lack of a political agreement that would allow the implementation of an electoral calendar in a favorable climate."

The Core Group calls for 2021 to be a year of democratic renewal in Haiti with the holding of free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

It therefore recalls that the responsibility for organizing the overdue electoral process rests primarily with the national authorities who must deal with the essential questions of security, transparency and logistics.

The Core Group urges all stakeholders to show good faith and redouble their efforts to find a political agreement that will facilitate the holding of such elections as soon as possible.

He encourages all actors to put their differences aside in order to find without delay a common solution to the current crisis, in particular the insecurity which weighs very heavily on the daily life of Haitians.

As for the change of Constitution, the Core Group expresses its concern that this process is not at this stage sufficiently inclusive, participatory or transparent. Such a reform should take place on the basis of a broad consultation that involves all of the nation’s vital force.

"It is crucial that the year 2021 allows Haitians to express their will through democratic means by exercising their right to vote," the statement ended.
