Nearly 100 immigration advocates, media figures, human rights activists and representatives of international non-governmental organizations on Tuesday in a letter to President Biden, Vice President Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, called for re-designating Haiti under the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) program.

Recall that under the TPS, foreign nationals in the United States receive a work permit and an authorization to remain in the United States if the American authorities determine that the conditions in the person's country of origin are too dangerous for them for a return.

Haiti was initially designated for the TPS following the January 2010 sesime.

Like many designations that must be renewed at least every 18 months, the Obama administration issued more or less summary TPS renewals until the Trump administration in 2017 announced it would end the TPS for Haiti. in mid-2019.

Court injunctions blocked the termination leaving some 55,000 beneficiaries in doubt until a new designation is issued or the terms of the TPS are changed by Congress or the judiciary.

Note that a new TPS designation for Haiti would protect not only current beneficiaries, but also all Haitian nationals who have arrived in the United States since the last designation in 2017. According to most estimates, the number of Haitians protected would more or less double under a new designation.

During his campaign in South Florida in 2020, the Joe Biden had promised to review the TPS designation for Haiti and to stop the evictions.
