Haiti - Economy : Suggestions of the Dominican tourism operators

As part of Tourism Week, initiated by the President Michel Martelly, a Dominican delegation of tour operator : Denise Reyes Estrella (of DS Travel), the French tour operator Henry Verne (of Bahía Tour) in Dominican Republic, and Jean Michael Cau (Travel Cervantes) have exposed to Cap-Haitien, before the President Martelly, officials of the Ministry of Tourism and local entrepreneurs in the tourism industry, the necessary conditions to increase the number of Dominican tourist visiting in Haiti During a workshop, Estrella Reyes presented a paper entitled "How to start to develop tourism in Haiti and its potential."

The dominican tourism professionals, indicated that the objective of increasing the number of Dominicans tourists in Haiti, requires a certain number of preconditions which include: the simplification of the migration formalities that take too long and the elimination of visa requirements for the Dominicans visiting Haiti through travel agents and tour operators who can demonstrate and ensure that the people are traveling for vacation (pleasure trip), for visiting Haiti. Currently a single visa to travel to Haiti (valid two months) costs USD$85 dollars which discourages many Dominican tourists and family trips.

Among the issues discussed for the development of Dominican tourism and other nationalities towards Haiti, Estrella Reyes stressed the importance of proper preservation of historical sites, the involvement of the population in tourist welcome, the professionalization of services and the application of international standards at the level of the hotels. She also suggested the creation and the promotion of tourist routes and emphasizes on the need to ensure the safety of passengers, especially in the north of the country, adding that in this way, there will be always tourists who will want to stay overnight or a few days on the North Coast, to discover the culture, history and monuments in Haiti.

For their part, Jean Michel Cau and Henry Verne, have insisted that the Haitian communities are involved and facilitate the process of tourism development in Haiti.
