Haiti - Politic : DR wants to identify all Haitians living illegally on its territory

On Monday, the Minister of the Interior and of the Police, Jesús Vásquez Martínez, inaugurated in Dajabón and Elías Piña, the first two registration offices for Haitians and other foreigners of different nationalities living in an irregular migratory situation on the Dominican territory.

Minister Martines underlined that 40 offices in total will be opened throughout the territory, stressing that these offices will play an essential role in the efforts of the Government to guarantee the security of the territory, because they will allow to register all irregular foreigners in an identification register, to know how many there are and where they are. The proper functioning of these offices will be ensured by trained and qualified staff available to respond to each case, he added.

In addition, he specified that "the entry in the register does not imply a regularization of the status of the irregular foreigner but only his identification" warning "[...] the Dominican Republic cannot continue to have foreign people [mostly Haitians] living irregularly in our country and over whom we have no type of control."
