Haiti - FLASH: Collision between a sloop of Haitian migrants and a police boat from the TCI

On Monday, November 29, 2021, the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Coastal Radar Station alerted TCI Royal Police at approximately 9:40 p.m. that it was following a suspicious boat 4 miles off the coast of North West Point.

The Royal Police Vessel "M / V Sea Guardian" which was already on patrol attended the scene, where the crew saw the sloop (sailboat) overloaded with migrants heading for shore.

During an interception attempt, the migrants' boat collided with the "M / V Sea Guardian". Although many migrants fell into the water during the incident, police said no loss of life was reported, due to swift action by staff and additional help from American guards coasts. However, research at sea continues with the help of the US Coast Guard and a team from the Department of the Environment and Coastal Resources.

In total, the M / V Sea Guardian rescued 64 Haitian migrants (41 men and 23 women) who were handed over to immigration officials.

16 other migrants (men) who had swam to shore in an attempt to escape were later apprehended and taken to the detention center. Local authorities continued to search the land for possible other illegal Haitians.

On Tuesday, November 30, police confirmed that so far 80 migrants of Haitian origin in an irregular migratory situation were in police custody.
