On Monday, November 29, 2021, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said the State is still awaiting guidance from the Federal Government on how to better serve migrants from Haiti who have turned up in large numbers in the state (following the migration crisis https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34770-haiti-flash-thousands-of-haitian-migrants-detained-in-the-usa-in-a-makeshift-camp.html) , often without the necessary documentation to qualify for the services.

Three weeks ago, Governor Baker and the 11 members of the State's Congressional delegation wrote two letters to the Biden administration asking for clarification on how best to help these people who have left Haiti and who come to shelters and emergency rooms.

Governor Baker, in his letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, asked the Federal Government to help him estimate how many people and families to expect, and what types of documents can be used to verify their status and qualify them for State and federal benefits to which these migrants may be entitled.

Massachusetts Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, along with the state congressional delegation, followed up with a letter asking the Office of the Director of Refugee Resettlement Cindy Huang to cooperate fully with the State. "We are waiting for more information from the feds," said Baker, who compared what is happening with migrants from Haiti to the more predictable and controlled process of resettlement of refugees from Afghanistan.

"We want to help these people and I would love to have a lot more guidance and a lot more structure from the feds around both what benefits they’re eligible for and how we’re going to actually get to the point where we can actually plan a little bit [...]" said Baker.
