Haiti - FLASH : Haiti is the country that suffers the most from hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean

"Latin America and the Caribbean are facing a critical food security situation. There was an almost 70% increase in hunger between 2014 and 2020," said Julio Berdegué, FAO Regional Representative.

Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua are the 3 countries where people suffer the most from hunger with 46.8% (Haiti), 27.4% (Venezuela) and 19.3% (Nicaragua) warned the FAO, followed Guatemala (16.8%) and Honduras (13.5%). The phenomenon of food insecurity affected more women (41.8%) than men (32.2%).

The rest of the countries recorded a prevalence of less than 10% and less than 2.5% in the case of Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay.

The figures are taken from the Regional Panorama of Food and Nutrition Security 2021 report, a joint publication of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with other entities such as the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) or the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
