Haiti - Culture : Binational artistic residency, success of the first activity

Five magnificent puppets carried were completed during the first binational artistic residency activity of the "Binational cultural dialogue / Diálogo cultural binacional" project, designed and implemented by the Haiti Jazz Foundation and the Caracoli association to strengthen collaboration binational in the field of culture, which brought together a group of ten young artists in Radhamés Park, San Cristóbal (Dominican Republic).

These puppets were produced under the direction of two artists Louvenson Saint Juste, from Haiti and Luis Rivas from the Dominican Republic who together explored innovative ways to celebrate the secular Carnivals of both countries. Almost as many women as men took part in the making of these five carnival puppets, each of them being the product of collective work between Haitians and Dominicans

The two artists exchanged their knowledge and approaches to integrate recycled materials into their Carnival masks and costumes, for a colorful result. Participants in the creation workshops used plastic bags and bottles, glass, textiles and metal, and other waste, to create beautiful puppets that will be incorporated into Carnival parades in Jacmel on February 20 in Haiti and of the Santo Domingo Carnival parade on March 7 in the Dominican Republic.

Find out more about the "Binational Cultural Dialogue" project :

The "Binational Cultural Dialogue" project supported by the European Union, takes the form of a "Haitian-Dominican cultural season", involving artists from different disciplines (plastic arts, street art, music, etc.), bearers of tradition (carnival, rara, gastronomy...), heads of organizations and cultural professionals. Thus, 11 major cultural events in both countries will host meetings and cultural and artistic exchanges. These events are national events, carried out in different cities of the two countries and carried by well-established cultural organizations.

The project, which extends over 18 months, until January 2023, involves at least 100 Haitian and Dominican cultural professionals, 16 of whom will participate in an exchange in the neighboring country.
