Haiti - Social : Demonstrations in Gaillard, around the new road

The work of the new road that will link Gaillard, [communal section of Ouanaminthe, located on the Domincan border - North-East] and the free zone, and the free zone are disrupted due to demonstrations that continue for several days. Last Tuesday, residents had once again erected barricades and burned tires, throwing stones on the peacekeeper of the Minustah present on site to disperse the demonstrators.

The protesters demanded among other things: the compensation of approximately 50 families who lost their homes, following this important work, they also require that the work of water supply is completed in Gaillard, recalling to the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) that Gaillard is the neighborhood where we recorded the highest number of cholera cases. Finally they claim the electrical connection on the the grid of the Electricity of Haiti (EDH) in order to use this service which they are deprived.

According to some testimonials, the demonstrators want to find a a resolution to the situation and put an end to their movement as soon as possible, demonstrations that affect businesses in the zone. They urge the Government to respond positively to their requests and demand the departure of the military forces of the Minustah of their community, which only exacerbate a situation already tense enough.
