Haiti - Environment : Earthquakes up 22% (July 2022)

The Alliance for Risk Management and Business Continuity (AGERCA), representing the private sector and civil society in the National System for Risk and Disaster Management (SNGRD), reveals in its bulletin of July 2022, that according to observations made from national (Ayiti-earthquakes, UTS-BME) and regional (Cuba, Jamaica and Dominican Republic) seismological networks 138 earthquakes of magnitudes between 1.3 and 5.2 were recorded for the entire territory national, from July 1st to 31.

Compared to the month of June 2022 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37158-haiti-environment-113-earthquakes-recorded-in-june-2022.html during which 113 earthquakes were observed, the July recorded 25 more earthquakes (+22.12%)

Among the earthquakes recorded, only one, of magnitude 5.2, was felt by the population. The epicenter was located at sea, north of Fort-Liberté in the Northeast department.

124 earthquakes (89.9%) had a magnitude less than or equal to 3

83 earthquakes (60.1%) produced at a depth less than or equal to 10 km.

60 earthquakes (43.5%) occurred at sea which could have presented a risk of tsunami if the conditions had been met. (minimum magnitude of 6.5 and maximum depth of 50 km, fault at sea, etc...)

116 earthquakes (84%) were located in the 3 departments affected by the earthquake of August 14, 2021 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes-updated-10am.html , with 15 in the South, 34 in Nippes and 67 in Grand'Anse.

From August 14, 2021 to July 31, 2022 (11 months 16 days), the three departments most affected by the earthquake of August 14, 2021 therefore continue to suffer the consequences of this major earthquake.

During this period, the Nippes recorded 1,116 earthquakes, the Grand'Anse 930 and the South 359, for a total of 2,305 earthquakes. Note that a high percentage of earthquakes recorded in Grand'Anse have their epicenter located at sea north of Jérémie, along the North - Grand'Anse - Nippes fault zone.
