Haiti - Security : Tomorrow Thursday, important day for the future of the Minustah 07/09/2011 13:45:27
The Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs of the countries of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) which have peacekeepers in Haiti, will meet tomorrow Thursday in Montevideo [Uruguay] from 10:00am, to the Club of the Air Force in Carrasco, to discuss of a possible "gradual withdrawal" of the troops in Haiti. Will be present at the meeting the Ministers of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. This possibility has been raised for months, particularly by Brazil, who heads the Peace Mission of the UN since 2004 and which estimates that it is necessary to gradually reduce the presence of the Mission in Haiti. Monday, on the BBC Brasil, Mr. Celso Amorim, the new Brazilian Minister of Defense, said that the maintenance of the troops in Haiti would not be beneficial for Haiti in the long term. These comments have been confirmed Tuesday by the press office of the Ministry of Defence, which clarified that there was no calendar to begin with the troop withdrawals. The UN mission, who was always intended to be temporary, currently has more than 12,000 men in Haiti. See also : HL/ HaitiLibre
