Haiti - FLASH : D-Day, Back to school maintained, but at high risk

Monday, October 3rd, back to school day, hhttps://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37497-haiti-flash-date-of-the-start-of-the-2022-2023-school-year-postponed-official.html despite the zones of urban guerrillas, the lack of fuel and the difficulties of circulating on the barricaded roads, the Ministry of National Education takes note of the various appeals emanating from educational institutions and various sectors of the population calling for a safe climate and a better framework to facilitate the movement of schoolchildren, parents and teachers, but maintains the date of the start of the school year.

Let's recall that "Barbecue" launched last week a warning to the population "We ask the Haitian people, from Monday [October 3rd, back-to-school day], to avoid going out in the streets without real need" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37775-haiti-flash-warning-and-implicit-threats-of-barbecue.html

At most, the Ministry recognizes that the first week of the 2022-2023 school calendar starting on October 3rd will be difficult for the relaunch of school activities in several places in the country and expects a gradual return to school.

He announces that the Government is committed, once again, to creating an appropriate security framework and an adequate system to facilitate the movement of the population in general and schoolchildren in particular.

Several schools and high schools have decided to keep their doors closed, such as the Lycée Saint-Louis de Gonzague where its director Brother Simon Alphonse informs parents "[...] After extensive consultation with the Saint-Louis community : parents, teachers, administrative staff and support, the management of the Institution Saint Louis de Gonzague informs you that it will not receive students on October 3rd, 2022 until further notice. Thank you for your collaboration !" Brother Simon ALPHONSE, Director

For its part, the Haitian Land Transport Sector (STTH) and other transport unions such as the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti (APCH), the Union of Drivers and Owners of Vehicles of the Lower Artibonite (SCPVBA), the National Federation of Transport and Haitian Workers (FENATRATH) inform all owners, drivers, workers, station managers that the conditions are not yet met to send children to school this Monday, October 3rd. Emphasizing "We cannot risk sending our children to the streets in this fragile situation. We are in a difficult situation, the destiny of the Haitian people is in their hands. The right to eat, the right to move around, the right to work is non-negotiable. The transport unions, like the labor unions, will continue to mobilize so that the Government hears the voice of the Haitian people."

Moreover, this return to school not only carries risks, but high-level officials warn that schools on the border with the Dominican Republic could be seriously threatened by gangs https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37698-haiti-demonstrations-more-than-twenty-schools-vandalized-looted-and-damaged.html
