Haiti - Social: Towards a family planning policy ?

Organized under the auspices of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), a delegation composed of Dr. Florence Guillaume member of the Office of the President, of Dr. Bertrand Sinal, President of the Health Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and of Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, next UNFPA Representative in Haiti, have participated last week in a high-level international meeting in New York.

This meeting focused on the means of contraception and reproductive health. It showed among other things, that good management of these means is is essential to reduce the maternal mortality and facilitate women's access to family planning services. Launched by UNFPA in 2007, this program provides a framework to go beyond ad hoc responses to product shortages and favour sustainable approaches on the security and use of essential supplies.

From October 31, the world should count seven billion people, whose 1.8 billion young people, 90% of them will live in developing countries "That means that one billion young women are actively seeking information and services, we are talking" explained Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UNFPA.

At the end of the meeting, some experts have argued that women want to "avoid or space pregnancies, but she don't have access to modern methods." According to these experts, the "most effective" method to save the lives of women, is a voluntary family planning and put available to them enough contraceptives.

The 12 countries represented at this meeting, by their Ministers of Finance and Health, and parliamentarians were Burkina Faso, Haiti, Ethiopia, Laos, Mali, Madagascar, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
