Haiti - FLASH : An intervention force in Haiti around January 10, 2023?

In an interview with the Creole service of the Voice of America, Democratic Congresswoman from Florida of Haitian origin Sheila Cherfilus McCormick, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, declared that it was necessary to send a force of intervention to help dismantle armed gangs and stabilize Haiti.

She clarified that it would not be a military force, but a rapid intervention force to help the National Police of Haiti (PNH) to fight and disarm gangs and that this force would not remain long in Haiti.

She said this force would enter to Haiti around January 10, 2023 after meetings Sheila Cherfilus McCormick had with United Nations officials.

The Congress made a recommendation that the United States enter to Haiti to help with the United Nations "It was a very difficult decision, but it is to protect people."

Sheila Cherfilus McCormick pointed out "we can't provide food, medicine etc... if the gangs are there. She invited the young people to leave the gangs, warning that during the intervention there will be exchanges of fire and people will die.

In addition, she appealed to police officers, Haitian police trainers in the diaspora, who speak Creole to be part of this intervention force, also she wishes that Haitian doctors and nurses also enter Haiti to help considering "[...] if we take all these Haitians and all the other countries we can help the country with the mission of protecting the country."

Finally, Sheila Cherfilus McCormick affirmed that the United States would sanction all those already targeted by the Canadian government for their support of armed gangs.
