Haiti - Health : Brazil contributes to the construction of three health units in Bon Repos

The Ministry of Health of Brazil contributes to the construction of three health units in Bon Repos, a hospital, a rehabilitation institute and a laboratory for orthotics and prosthetics. For the construction of the hospital, of laboratory and institute, Brazil will provide 5 million Brazilian reals (about 104 million gourdes). In addition, 2 million Brazilian reals (about 41.6 million gourds) will be invested in medical equipment. The conclusion of the work is scheduled for May 2012. The Ministry of Health will support the construction of the Community Hospital of Bon Repos, and the Rehabilitation Institute Haiti-Brazil, on the same land in the town of Bon Repos.

In partnership with the Cuban government, Brazil will also build a laboratory for orthotics and prosthetics in the same place. Also, in the town of Bon Repos, will be built the Community Hospital of Reference, an emergency care unit. The three institutions will serve a population of about 250,000 people.

With the January 2010 earthquake, the number of amputees has reached over 7,000. Most of them have lost limbs. The Brazilian government will hire about 50 Haitian professionals in the field of health to work at the Rehabilitation Institute. They will be paid with funds from the Brazilian Cooperation Agency. The Albert Einstein Institute, Brazil, will offer training to Haitian professionals.

In this set of initiatives, the Ministry of Health of Brazil has donated in August 30 ambulances equipped, in addition to providing technical training through its Mobile Emergency Service (SAMU) to structure a national system of emergency care in Haiti. Also in August have been given by the Ministry of Health 360 tonnes of ringer's solution, an essential drug for the treatment of moderate and severe cases of cholera and 350,000 equipment (complete articles for the application of serum), ready for the fight against cholera in Haiti. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-3623-haiti-health-30-ambulances-and-360-tons-of-medicines-donation-of-brazil.html

These initiatives have also complied with the commitments taken by Brazil during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding Brazil, Cuba and Haiti to strengthen health systems and epidemiological surveillance in Haiti, signed March 27, 2010. With the Memorandum of Understanding, the Ministries of Health of the three countries committed themselves together for the reconstruction of the health sector in Haiti, after the earthquake of 2010.
