Haiti - Dominican Rep. : Egg export to Haiti suspended, flour authorized again

The Dominican Government has decided to temporarily suspend the export of eggs to Haiti and other markets.

Joel Santos, the Minister of the Presidency, explained that this was a temporary measure to prevent an increase in the price of eggs on the market and guarantee the supply of the Dominican market, specifying that this measure will come into force this Friday, January 6, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. adding "The food security of the population is fundamental and the Government is taking measures to guarantee it."

The measure will be reviewed in 15 days to determine whether it is maintained or lifted.

Let's recall that the Haitian table egg market is 90% supplied by eggs from the Dominican Republic, or about 1.2 million eggs per day.

In addition, Joel Santos announced the lifting of the ban on the export of flour abroad, including Haiti, exports which had been suspended to avoid the rise of bread and other processed products.

Let's recall that Haiti is the largest importer of wheat flour and meslin (cereal mix) from the Dominican Republic. 141 million US dollars in the last five years according to statistics from the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana).
