Haiti - Agriculture : National Monitoring Survey on Food and Nutritional Security (household component 2022)

For about 4 years, Haiti has been facing a socio-political crisis and poor agricultural performance that have significant repercussions on the food security of Haitian households, especially the most vulnerable.

In a context of deteriorating factors such as inflation, rainfall deficits, generalized gang violence and the impact of various previous shocks that are likely to influence food security conditions in Haiti, it had become essential to organize a new national survey with the aim of updating data on food security and nutrition but also to assess the markets and the performance of the spring 2022 agricultural campaign.

Analysis of the data from this survey carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development and the National Food Security Coordination (CNSA) reveals, among other things, that in 2022, the proportion of households that experienced hunger due to lack of resources to acquire food has more than doubled to reach 71% against only 32.9% in 2021. Just over 7 out of 10 households have used crisis and/or emergency strategies.

Regarding sources of income, the three main sources of household income are agricultural production (61%), trade (61%) and self-employment (21%).

About 40% of urban and rural households say they have had difficulty accessing the market to source basic food items and 20% of rural households say they have had difficulty accessing the market to source inputs (seeds, fertilizers etc...)

Access to food (87%) is still the top priority need identified by households

Overall, the reduction in the performance of agricultural production, the persistence of insecurity and conflicts between armed gangs and the illness of one or more household members are the main shocks that have affected them. For the factors blocking agriculture, about 65% of households said they had no money, 37% mentioned the too high price of inputs, 24% mentioned the problem of labor and 23% highlighted the unavailability of seeds as well as the lack of support.
