Haiti - DR : Towards a pact between the Government and all Dominican political parties on the crisis in Haiti

Thursday, March 2nd, 2023 around 4:30 p.m., President Luis Abinader led at the National Palace, the first meeting with 28 of the 30 political parties aimed at establishing by consensus, a national pact (agreement) on the Haitian crisis. The Dominican Government, in addition to President Abinader, was represented by ministers Jesús-Chu-Vásquez (interior and police) and Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa (defense).

In addition to renowned political figures, this meeting was attended by executives and members of the Economic and Social Council, as well as trade unions and popular organisations.

Each Party representative had the opportunity to express their concerns about the situation in Haiti in front of the President.

The Dominican Government and the majority of political parties have agreed to form 4 commissions responsible for issues of foreign policy, border control, immigration policy and the effects of the Haitian crisis on the Dominican economy.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday March 8 and the participation of representatives of the Dominican Liberation Parties (PLD) and the Dominican Revolution (PRD), absent from this first session, is expected. The delegates for each commission will be chosen that day and the schedule of meetings will be defined.

The National Pact will define the measures to be taken in the short, medium and long term vis-à-vis the neighboring nation. According to the calendar, this Pact could be ready before April 15, 2023.
