Haiti - FLASH : The PM begins the process of designating the members of the next CEP

Following the agreement of December 21, 2022, Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry via his Chief of Staff, Samuel Henry Saturné, has initiated contacts with representatives of various sectors in order to establish a list of 20 names which will be submitted to the High Council of the Transition (HCT) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38646-haiti-politic-the-decree-relating-to-the-high-council-of-transition-published-in-le-moniteur.html no later than April 17, 2023, among which 9 members of the CEP will be appointed by the HCT in consultation with the PM in accordance with article 16 of the December agreement https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38594-haiti-politic-the-government-publishes-the-text-of-the-december-21-agreement-without-the-names-of-the-members-of-the-hct-official-text.html

Wednesday, April 12, the Primature had invited Jacques Sampeur, President of the National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH), to his official residence. The members of the Association having to communicate, like each sector concerned, a choice of 2 names of citizens as possible representatives in consultation with Association of independent media of Haiti (AMIH) However, the ANMH could not be present at this invitation, President Sampeur being on a trip abroad and his Vice President Robert Denis, was kidnapped on Tuesday...

The Chef de Cabinet Saturné recalls in his correspondence to the ANMH that, "[...] The criteria are always the same : to be Haitian, to reside in the country, to enjoy an excellent reputation and to have never been sentenced to a sentence afflictive or infamous, have a university level, justify ten years of professional experience, have a legal or administrative training, or a good knowledge of electoral issues" underlining "The Government is well aware of the fact that the improvement of the security environment is a prerequisite for the organization of elections. We are working to provide our security forces with the necessary means and training to put them in a position to deal effectively with the current situation. Preparing for good elections takes a long time. It is important that the electoral body starts working as soon as possible, with a view to restoring its structures across the country."

The ANMH has received the correspondence from Saturné and the Council should decide on the follow-up to be given to this correspondence.
