Haiti - Health : Towards a better distribution of essential drugs and medical devices in Haiti (Video)

The Essential Medicines Program (PROMESS) has ensured for more than 30 years the availability and accessibility of quality essential medicines and medical devices for public and private non-profit medical institutions in Haiti.

Partnership managed by the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO Haiti), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), PROMESS is an essential device, in particular as part of efforts to respond to humanitarian crises and health emergencies in the country.

However, the operational infrastructure of PROMESS having deteriorated over the years, a renovation had become essential to strengthen its operational capacity and improve the working conditions of the staff.

Started in the second half of 2022 with the financial support of the US State Department, the work focused primarily on improving the temperature conditions for all medicines and medical supplies stored in the PROMESS warehouse. The aim was to improve air circulation and storage conditions in cold rooms, in particular to improve the quality of vaccine storage and reduce the risk of fire.

In addition, the project made it possible to acquire new equipment to increase the loading capacity of the warehouse, strengthen the storage facilities and secure the storage of vaccines through the purchase of a new emergency electric generator.

The installation of a new incinerator was also a key aspect of the project, improving the management of medical waste. The renovation project also aimed to improve the working conditions of staff, by renovating the floors and rehabilitating external structures such as sidewalks or access ramps.
