Haiti - ProHuerta : Argentina sends a mission to develop agroecological school gardens

A mission of "White Helmets" volunteers from the Argentine Agency for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance (ACIAH), the Ministry of Social Development and the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) left on April 17 for Haiti, in order to help with the installation of school gardens and "reactivate" the ProHuerta program, which Argentina had been running since 2005 and was interrupted in 2016, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13468-haiti-agriculture-true-success-of-prohuerta-program-in-haiti.html declared the Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The mission, made up of two agronomists, a nutritionist and two logisticians, was sent to the commune of Les Cayes (South Dept.), to work on the planning and implementation of 10 agroecological school gardens as part of the ProHuerta Program in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP), to promote the role of the school as a social actor and provide tools for food security and nutritional health to the local community.

This mission will carry out a new stage of the School Gardens Project, work that Argentina resumed after the commitment of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Santiago Cafiero with his Haitian counterpart, to collaborate to reverse the critical food situation that Haiti is going through.

The schools where these gardens will be created are located in the Haitian municipalities of Les Cayes, Torbeck, Camp Perrin and Maniche.

The program emphasizes the promotion of the Haitian educational field to "stimulate food production and the nutritional health of local communities in vulnerable situations", they explained.

One of the objectives is to work on the exchange and training of teachers, executives and technicians to strengthen school practices in the implementation of these agro-ecological gardens. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-1103-haiti-agriculture-argentinian-experts-train-haitians.html

The transversal incorporation of techniques and technologies in the educational community, will allow the formation of a local team that will accompany, assist and coordinate a network of school and community gardens in different regions of Haiti, whose task will be to multiply the agroecological production of food on the territory and to manage the resources.
