Haiti - FLASH : The OAS approves a resolution for the immediate restoration of Security in Haiti

On Friday, June 23, the Organization of American States (OAS) concluded its 53rd General Assembly in Washington, D.C. and adopted by consensus a resolution entitled "For the immediate restoration of security, the strengthening of humanitarian aid and support for the protection of human rights and democracy in Haiti" in the presence of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the region and the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

Through this resolution, the OAS General Assembly decided that immediate measures be taken to facilitate assistance to Haiti with the strengthening of its police force. The actions also include assistance to resolve the humanitarian crisis affecting this country and to organize the elections.

The resolution stresses "the need for the OAS to provide immediate assistance to Haiti" for security, the protection of human rights and the calling of elections "as soon as conditions permit".

Likewise, the resolution urges states that "are in a position to do so" to "provide immediate assistance and specific funds" to Haiti.

Specifically, it offers to provide equipment and training to the National Police of Haiti (PNH) to combat gangs and kidnappings, as well as to improve border and port security in the country and eliminate the traffic in arms and ammunition.

At the same time, the resolution calls on states to provide "assistance in the area of human rights, electoral assistance and the strengthening of democracy."

In addition, it calls on the countries of the region "to consider participating in an integrated security mission, an operation supported by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who has proposed the establishment of an "action force fast” made up of soldiers from one or more countries and not under the UN flag.
