Haiti - Health : Need for a humanitarian corridor for victims of cholera

In a note dated November 14, 2023, the "Défenseurs Plus" Collective pleads for the granting of a humanitarian corridor for victims of cholera in Haiti.

While it is true that Haiti has experienced three years without any cases of cholera (2019 to 2022), since its reappearance in October 2022 "the number of victims is only increasing, thousands of cases have been recorded causing many deaths". Among the most affected departments: the West (Cornillon, Port au Prince, Cité Soleil), the South-East (Bainet), the South and Nippes. However, one of the biggest obstacles to efforts to combat this epidemic is the difficulty of access to victims due to roads controlled by armed gangs and insecurity...

In other cases, accessibility issues are internal. characterized either by the absence of adequate transport equipment (ambulance), or by the risks of traveling on the roads. In Cornillon, several cases of death have been recorded during the transport of contaminated patients.

On the other hand, the management of cholera is structural and the increasingly dysfunctional health system does not meet the needs of the population either in terms of quality or quantity.

In addition, considering the centralized nature of the state in Haiti, goods and services generally come from Port-au-Prince to reach the departments. As a result, the primary elements to deal with cholera such as solutions, chlorine, oral serum are dependent on Port-au-Prince.

Consequently, « Défenseurs Plus » calls for the combined efforts of all, mainly those in power, with a view to creating a humanitarian corridor to transport aid to victims of cholera in different parts of the country.

Finally, the collective calls on the responsible authorities to define strategies to contain this disease and limit the number of victims who continue to increase...
