Haiti - Politic : Guy Philippe's activism supported by an outside hand ?

Edwin Paraison, former consul of Haiti in the Dominican Republic and Director of the Zile Foundation, declared that Haitians are experiencing a situation of great confusion after the call for civil disobedience launched by former senator-elect Guy Philippe.

"Since Guy Philippe returned to the country, he has maintained a clear and 'very strange' political activism, because if he did not have the support of 'an outside hand', it would be difficult for him to return and, time in the country, to devote himself to this type of active politics," declared Edwin Paraison in the Dominican press.

He believes that Philippe launched a civil disobedience movement on Monday, to see what level of popular support he receives.

Following the call for civil disobedience launched by former Senator-elect Guy Philippe to force the departure of Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry and his Government... Monday January 15, 2024, in certain cities of the country including Jérémie, Les Cayes, Ouanaminthe, Miragoâne and Petit-Goâve, barricades of burning tires were erected on several access roads while others were blocked by trucks... Public and private schools, public and commercial banks and stores kept their closed doors in these cities...

"As part of his (Philippe) movement calling on the population to civil disobedience and to occupy state offices, including that of the Prime Minister. Note, there is still no reaction from the ruling party, nor have we seen any movements from the national police to guarantee security and avoid clashes [...]"

"It is important to emphasize that unlike the 2004 movement where a good part of Aristide's opposition supported Philippe's movement, the political class is today largely silent, it has received the support of this or that political figure, but without much relevance and from one pastor to another," he declared.
