Haiti - Health : 35.4% of births in Dom. Rep. were of Haitian mothers (January 2024)

According to the Dominican registers of the National Health Service (SNS) in January 2024, 8,611 births were recorded in public network hospitals including 5,554 to Dominican mothers (64.6%) and 3,048 births to mothers of Haitian nationality (35.4 %). In 2019 for the same month there were 21.6% of births by Haitian mothers, a rate which has only increased since then.

This represents 1.7% fewer births in the Haitian population compared to January 2023.

The highest percentages of births to Haitian mothers in January 2024 were recorded by hospitals located in border areas, such as that of General Melenciano, in Independencia, with 94.1% of the total. In Pedernales, the Elio Fiallo Hospital recorded 65.8% of births to Haitian mothers. In the province of Dajabón, the average percentage of births to Haitian mothers in public health facilities in January was 62.2%, reaching 100% at the Restoration hospital; in the province of Monte Cristi it was 59.8%, with 100% in the Guayubín and Julio Álvarez Acosta hospitals, while in Santiago Rodríguez it was 56.1%, reaching 60.4% in the General Santiago Rodríguez Hospital.

In Santiago de los Caballeros, the birth rate among Haitian mothers during the month of January was 50.8%, with 49.1% in the main maternity hospital, which is the Estrella Ureña Hospital, reaching 100% in d other smaller ones like that of San José. from Las Matas.

In the metropolitan region, the percentage of births to Haitian mothers stood at 28.2% in January 2024, reaching 46.2% in the National District, with 47% at the Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia Maternity Hospital; In Santo Domingo province, the ratio was 22.2%, reaching 67.7% at Engombe Hospital and 45.4% at San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternal and Child Hospital.

The SNS informs that given the impact that pregnant Haitian women have on the budget of health services and on the maternal mortality rate, it will continue to monitor the trend of Haitian births throughout 2024.
