Haiti - FLASH : The Bahamas implement a blockade on the South-East of the archipelago

On Monday, March 4th, Raymond King, head of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF), reported that the archipelago had activated a blockade operation in the south of the Caribbean country after reports that thousands of detainees had escaped to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

He declared at a press conference "We are taking steps to block the southeastern Bahamas using air assets and multiple surface assets. We intend to do this in collaboration with our regional partners, the United States Coast Guard and the Cuban Border Patrol, through the exchange of information and intelligence [...] in order to effectively block this area and prevent any migration from Haiti."

King acknowledged that Bahamian authorities were concerned that some of the escaped detainees or others might try to flee Haiti and head north, saying "We are preparing to reject or intercept any vessel leaving Haiti and heading toward the Bahamas."
