Haiti - FLASH : Acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigns (video)

Monday March 11, 2024, Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry by videoconference from Puerto Rico where he is still blocked, announced during the extraordinary session of CARICOM in Kingston (Jamaica) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41852-haiti-caricom-extraordinary-session-on-the-transition-in-haiti.html that he agreed to leave his functions, announced Mohamed Irfaan Ali Acting President of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), at a press conference in the outcome of the meeting "[...] We take note of the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry."

Ariel Henry confirmed her resignation by telephone to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was in Jamaica.

Mohamed Irfaan Ali said he was happy to announce "[...] a transitional governance agreement paving the way for a peaceful transition of power, continuity of governance, a short-term security action plan and free and fair elections [...]"

Later in the evening, Ariel Henry, after 10 days of silence, in a pre-recorded message announced to the population his departure and that of his Government.

Excerpts from the PM's resignation speec h:

"[...] The government that I lead cannot remain insensitive to this situation. There is no sacrifice too great for our country Haiti, the Government that I lead, after the Council of Ministers this evening agreed to set up a presidential transition council, the members of this council will be chosen after an agreement between the different sectors of national life. The Government that I lead will withdraw immediately after the installation of this Council. It will continue to liquidate current affairs until the appointment of a Prime Minister and a Government [...]"
