Haiti - Social : 100 Haitians adrift...

Saturday, November 5, a boat registered in Abaco, from Haiti, with more than 100 Haitian migrants, was found to the drift on the southern end of Harbour Island near South Bar in the early evening.

Under the supervision of the policy of Eleuthera, migrants were transported on vessels in Harbour Island, attracting many curious residents, Bahamians and Haitians. The Inspector Elvin Missick expressed gratitude to the citizens of Harbour Island who assisted the police in their operations.

Haitians were housed in a hall in Harbour Island, Saturday at 11pm in the custody of immigration. According to Chief Councillor Tremaine Johnson, residents donated sheets, clothes and food to the detained migrants.

A witness to the scene said that many Haitians appeared to be ill and were taken to the clinic and seen by a local doctor. A medical team from the capital, should be sent to Harbour Island on Sunday to assess the health status of the group. The migrants are expected to be moved by immigration on Monday.

The incident follows an operation, Thursday, November 3, on Harbour Island, during which agents of the Immigration and Defence Force of the Bahamas have detained over 60 people. Of these, 44 persons (23 men, 17 women and 4 children) were found without documented status in the country. The illegal migrants were taken to the capital for further processing.
