Haiti - Social : End of the free drinking water in 17 camps

While massive rehousing solutions, are slow to materialize for some 600.000 victims still living in camps, the National Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) announced last Friday, the permanent cessation, as of November 30, 2011, of the free distribution of drinking water in 17 camps of the metropolitan area, 40% are located in the municipality of Delmas.

DINEPA explained that the budget allocated to this free distribution for these camps is exhausted, while confirming at the same time, that it will continue its program of drinking water in other areas to improve the living conditions of the population.

DINEPA has confirmed that the camp populations concerned had been informed of this suspension of free service.

The projects supported by the community of water supply at low prices, conducted to Gomier, one of 15 rural villages in the Grand'Anse involved in this type of project, show that the population is perfectly able to pay for a water service [at low price] and that lasting solutions exist.
