Haiti - Environment : The CPT wants to spend more than a billion gourdes to clean the streets...

Monday May 20, 2024, the trash littering the streets everywhere across the capital and the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince was at the heart of a working session of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) at the Villa d'Accueil.

Architect Leslie Voltaire, on behalf of the Presidential Transitional Council, spoke with a delegation of mayors from the metropolitan area as well as Kenton Louis, the Director General of the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS). They reviewed the various obstacles encountered in the process of cleaning up the capital and its surroundings.

The project will affect Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Cité Soleil, all these municipalities controlled in part by armed bandits, consequently, agents of the Haitian National Police (PNH) and the military of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd'H) FAD'H will be mobilized to guarantee the safety of the operators of the Ministry of Public Works, the SNGRS and the town halls who will be hard at work in order to eradicate this shameful image, offered by the capital and its surroundings.

This project aims for at least 5 positive outcomes :

  • Protect the health of residents of the capital against the proliferation of microbes and rodents carrying all kinds of diseases due to the accumulation of garbage on public roads.

  • Reducing risks and preventing disasters that could be caused in less than a month by the arrival of the next hurricane season.

  • Proceed with the creation of 2,500 direct jobs and around 10,000 indirect jobs.

  • Create a political climate favorable to the takeover of public administration by the new transitional government, whose choice of Prime Minister is currently underway.

This sanitation project lasting 100 days, initially estimated at 1 billion gourdes, will be revised upwards due to the repair work on Boulevard 15 Octobre and the Maïs Gâté road.

Let's remember that among the sanitation projects launched by previous governments, none has given lasting results except for significant expenditure paid by the Public Treasury in conditions that are often not very transparent...
