Haiti - Politic : Reactions on the election of Garry Conille as transitional PM

Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Canada Mélanie Joly and CARICOM on the appointment of Garry Conille as Prime Minister of the transition :

Canada :

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I commend the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) for the nomination of the new Prime Minister-designate of Haiti and for moving toward achieving this important transition of power.

"We encourage Prime Minister-designate Garry Conille and the TPC to install without further delay a new government that puts the well-being of the Haitian people first. We look forward to Prime Minister-designate Conille and the TPC taking the appropriate steps toward reestablishing democratic institutions, holding free and fair elections, advancing good governance, and working with the international community to restore national security and provide much-needed relief to the Haitian people, who have endured so much.

"The ties between Canada and Haiti are strong. As Haiti continues on its path toward the restoration of democracy, Canada will remain a committed partner in providing security, development, and humanitarian assistance to the Haitian people."

CARICOM :

The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) welcome the unanimous election of Garry Conille by the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) as Prime Minister of the Transition which "is another important step forward on the path to free and fair elections and the return to constitutional order in Haiti."

Aware that there are still many challenges ahead, CARICOM expresses its support for the new Prime Minister-designate and reiterates its commitment of support to the Transitional Presidential Council, and to the people of Haiti. CARICOM looks forward to the early completion of the process to officially establish the institutions of transitional governance.

CARICOM commends the Transitional Presidential Council for putting the interest of the country and the people of Haiti above all else. This will remain a paramount objective as the TPC, working with Transitional Prime Minister Conille, continues to move forward in restoring security and in establishing the critical broadly representative institutions necessary for the delivery of public services, the provision of humanitarian relief, facilitating socio-economic improvement, and the holding of free and fair elections in a timely manner."
