Haiti - Education : The catch-up program for the 2023-2024 school year continues

Sunday June 23, 2024, Professor Antoine Augustin, Minister of National Education, visited one of theApprenticeship Compensation Centers, housed at the Lycée National de Pétion-Ville, where 1,023 students, girls and boys, follow courses in preparation for their participation in the 2024 State exams.

Coming from 26 public and private schools, established in the metropolitan region, there are in fact 514 students from the 9th fundamental year and 509 students from Secondary 4, who are participating for the 3rd consecutive weekend in the courses taught as part of the Program national apprenticeship compensation.

It was an opportunity for the Minister to recall that this program consists of giving "private" lessons to students who are preparing to participate in state exams, who have lost many class days due to the escalation armed violence that directly affected or affected several school districts across the country.

Program figures :

More than 45 centers operate in 9 departments across the country, for 80,000 beneficiaries. 2,500 teachers participate in this 7-week program representing 537 hours to make up with 3 weeks of consolidation before the program comes to an end.

Georges and Antoine Isemery High School, Anacaona High School, Ganthier High School, National High School of Pétion-Ville, Cinquantenaire High School, Daniel Fingnolé High School, Republic of Canada National School, Sister Thérèse of Calcutta School, Jean Marie Vincent High School, Firmin High School and Lycée Toussaint are some of the centers where this program takes place.

According to Minister Augustin, this effort to compensate for apprenticeships deserves to be applauded. However, taking into account some comments made by students, the Minister announced a mid-term evaluation of the Program in order to make the necessary corrections with a view to its improvement.

Students welcomed this initiative from the Ministry, supported by the UNICEF representation in Haiti. According to them, these learning compensation courses allow them to remedy their situation while reminding them of poorly assimilated or forgotten concepts.
