As part of its participation in the 47th Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of CARICOM Member States, Haiti announced to all leaders of the Caribbean community, the official membership of Haiti in the CARICOM Reparations Commission, which notably feeds into the important work of the Permanent Forum of People of African Descent at the UN.

"A highlight of our participation in this summit is certainly the announcement of Haiti's membership in the CARICOM Reparations Commission. This decision was greeted by acclamation within the Assembly and now rightly places Haiti at the heart of this debate and this important work carried out by the Region," declared Haitian Chancellor Dominique Dupuy.

It should be recalled that the initiative follows the meeting last week between the Rector of the State University of Haiti (UEH), Professor Fritz Deshommes and the Chancellor, Dominique Dupuy, on the creation of a working group within the UEH on "reparations and restitutions related to slavery and the debt of independence of the 19th and 20th centuries."
